Kentongan is a traditional communication tool that is still used in rural Indonesia. This tool is hit and the short length of the blow indicates a message that the situation in the village is safe, there are thieves, there is a fire, natural disaster, or other messages. Before there was so much sound from electronic devices as it is today, the sound of gongs could be heard as far away as other villages.
Kentongan is usually at the Siskamling (Environmental Security System) post where when a village needs help, other villages can hear it and provide assistance quickly. The kentongans on display were specially made, beautifully carved and became the opening symbol for an important event in 1990, namely the III National Level Rural Information Week, which was held in Wonogiri Regency, Central Java.
