In Sanskrit, the term Bodhisattva consists of two words, namely bodhi which means enlightenment or enlightenment, and sattwa which means creature. Bodhisattvas also refer to the Buddha in his previous life. In Mahayana teachings, Bodhisattvas take a promise not to enter nirvana until all beings have attained Buddhahood.

This means that he delays entering nirvana and chooses to descend to earth to sacrifice himself to help other beings achieve enlightenment. That's why Bodhisattvas are known to have compassion and selflessness and self-sacrifice. This is not the same as in the Theravada tradition in general, beings who attain enlightenment are Arahats, not Buddhas
